foreignyour company became prominent on theinternet with the release of a fake TomCruise video deep Tom Cruise that Ithink attracted like a billion views onTick Tock and Instagram which leads meto my first question which is please canwe at Ted have our own Tom Cruise videoplease uh you know I thought you mightask so um a little earlier we we had acrack maybe we'll have a look let's havea lookwhat's up internetI'm north of the Border a at the Tedconference it's not short for Theodorebut nobody calls me Thomas so it's coolit's Tom and Tedyes uh Canadaseriously though everybody here verynice very politeespecially the whalesI meanthatso really at metaphysic we specialize increating artificially generated contentthat looks and feels exactly likereality so we take kind of real worlddata we train these neural Nets and itcan more accurately than the effects orCGI really create this content but looksand feels so naturalum and so that is a great example of theAI being kind of prompted by the naturalperformance of a person and kind of theface goes on topand it helps the fact that yourco-founder is um you know he's a prettygood Tom Cruise impersonation indeedMiles Fisher is uh the foremost TomCruise but not Tom Cruiseum I think you have another example aswell can we see that one yes absolutelygoing kind of Beyond faces now talkingabout voice[Music][Music][Music]tell us what's happening there so whatyou see there is really it is thesinging voice of the lady singingSpanishum and aloe black who sings Wake Me Upthe Avicii song that he wrote withAvicii um we are transporting her voiceacross to his face so he doesn't sing inSpanish and then suddenly we transportit againum her voice into his voice so anybodyin the future will be able to speak anylanguage it'll look Perfectly Naturaland this content is becoming more andmore easy to create and eventually itwill end up with a scale where we willall be kind of main characters in ourown content on the internetokay[Laughter]before we dig into that just a bit Imean this what you've shown usum recorded video thereum rumor has it you can also do thiswith live video can that be right yes wecan do it live real time and this islike really at The Cutting Edge of whatwe can do today moving from offlineprocessing to we're processing it sofast that you can do it in real time andso well I'm going to challenge you andyour team to do a bit of a first yeah Imean there's video of you right up onthat screen show us something surprisingyou couldn't oh my gosh so wait so therewe go this is um you know a livereal-time model of Chrisum on top of meum running in real timeand next you'll tell me that it canoh LordI'm so uncomfortable with thisI am so uncomfortable Can it can it dovoice as wellum um we think they can we're we'rereally pushing we're really pushing alimit said AI technology now and I'mtalking exactly as I've heardScrambler is coming out is the one inItalian for sensing I am I am I'm deeplysorry everyonesubject to you to this you know thatthere's somethingpossibly even worse so to come clean onthis they made me you know I did somethey took some shots of me a coupleweeks ago doing different facialexpressions that they captured a videomodel and it turns out I discovered thisweek that they can apply that not justto Tom but to anyoneum and um so my my dear friend SonnyBates is here in the front row Sunny doyou consent to uh to channel inner mefor a minute well let's can we try thatI'm really worried about thisdo we have sunny on screenoh this they're Sunny oh no oh no oh no[Laughter]Iyou know Chris you look amazing allright enough of that cut that cut thatcut that right now I mean yes more Sunnymore of this Tom Tom Sunny Bates is thewoman who introduced me to Ted withoutSonny Bates none of us would actually behere now and we do we reward her withthis I mean and now you've finallybecome the master you know oh so lookokay amazingumit obviously occurs to everyone in thisroom that there are some things that cango horribly wrong with thisum and you know we've already seen youknow examples online of you know whatwe've had photographs of trump beingarrested that were unreal there could bevideo of itum there's pornography that can use thefaces of celebrity all these things thatwe've seen Deepak how how do you feelabout the downside of this technology sopersonally you know we build this stuffand I'm worried right worried is theright Instinct for everybody to have andthen you know beyond that think aboutyou know what can we do to prepareourselves how can we try to impact thefuture as it spirals in this directionwhere as individuals it's going to bekind of difficult to understand what'scomputer generated and what's real andso there are things that we can do thereraising public awareness of manipulatedmedia that's one that's you know this isa great forum for thatwill you claim to me thatif you were to shut down your companyright now it wouldn't stop the problemof deep fake videos because theTechnologies out there that that's goingto happen anyway that that's not withinyour control yes there are we're talkingabout content that is so compelling ifyou know we put any of ourselves insidecontent and maybe it is talking to ourloved ones or just talking to ourfriends on the beach and it's sorealistic that it looks real it's socompelling everybody is trying to createthis content today all of the gpus inthe universe are driving it trying tocreate this so it doesn't matter whatany one person does this will happen andit's happening very very quicklyso I mean we'll talk about the upside ina second but the but it seems likewe are going to have to get used to aworldwhere we and our children will no longerbe able to trust the evidence of oureyesI think soum we're going to have to understand anew set of Institutions to verify whatis authentic media but then we can beginto lead into some of the creative thingsthat happen from it and there arebenefits that come with that too soit'll be an accommodation so talk a bitabout the uh the the benefits I meanobviously on the entertainment sidethere's an amazing number ofpossibilities you have Tom Cruise we canhave impossible mission 273 in the year21.50 right like he will be with usforever we're working on number 75 000one net right now yeahI guess that I guess that is kind ofamazing like we love we've we lovelots of people in the world and we wantthe possibility that with theirpermission we can do more with them talkabout some other possible upsides whatwe've seen in kind of building thiscontent and watching people interactwith it especially if they're kind ofinteracting with themselves maybe it'stheir younger 20 year old self or maybethey're interacting with their partnerbut the young version of their partnerthere's this tremendous emotionalconnection that comes from the very veryphotorealistic Beyond The Uncanny kindof content and so if we can startdeploying thatum among regular people if we can scaleit up so that it works for any kind ofperson then we can begin to kind of youknow have more interesting meaningfulhuman kind of interactions andrelationships online and since thepandemic we all spend more time onlinebut it's chat and it's email if we couldget more human emotion more feelingthere's a lot that we can do with thatright and so you know education is agood example we could have an inspiringteacher in thousands of classroomsaround the world speaking every languagein the world at the same time andstudents could interact with each otherin a way that was you know goes beyondZoom there can be real cultural exchangereal socializationthere's a lot that we can doBeyond you so that teacher example is ispowerful to me like like the fact that asingle teacher could turn a writtenlesson into video in any number oflanguages and extend indefinitely thatseems like a real amplification ofpotentially of good you know humanintentum I'm excited by that I still don't getthe family side of it like that like ifyou want to have a human connection withsomeone in your family isn't it like howwon't people just be creeped out by ohmy God I was just looking at your avatarI thought I thought it was you you knowlike how do we get isn't that justcreepy I I think this is definitely acreepy element to this right and thenyou go beyond that and the creepinessdrops away and the medium drops away andit's the content and the connectionthat's there so you know I imagine thatyou know if I collect data from mygrandparents who are very old today thenin the future I'll be able to reliveexperiences with them and communicatewith them and that it's not going to beany good for them right they're probablygoing to have passed on but for me it'llhelp me process who I am my relationshipwith them that idea of kind ofdecoupling Human Experience both fromwhere it happens and the moment in timethat it happens I think that we cancreate these experiences through hyperreal photorealistic media that allow usto share the best of our experiences thebest of who we are I'm going to be verycurious to see who's who can feel thatright now my guess is that there's goingto have to be lots of experiments and alot of things are going to creep us outand maybe we'll find some things thatare just absolutely incredible but Ihave an important question for you whichis how the hell do I control me now hourlike you've got me on video what's tostop my me being misused across theinternet now that's right I think thatas we kind of allow companies to createthese realistic experiences asindividuals we need to be empowered toown our real world data the data used totrain the algorithms and we need tocontrol how our photorealistic avatarsare created and where they're used so tothis extent I was looking at kind ofconventional current legal institutionsto see what we could do to create newrights so I created a photorealisticavatar of myself submitted it to the UScopyright office to see if they wouldregister my copyright in it and this iswhat the video looked likehere is the AI realistic version ofmyselfeven if the appearance of this AIrepresentation of myself may changecosmetically or if I change my hair oradd creative features my intention is tocreate this AI version of myself thatembodies the essence of who I am as aperson under any circumstancewowso I think you have shown us what isgoing to be a repeated theme in thisconference which is the future is goingto beweird and wonderful at the same timequite what the balance is between thosetwo TBD but this is a world where eachof us is going to have to thinkdifferently about who we are and claimthese rights what you're saying is thatif people have this right you canpicture a world where for example if avideo goes viral on YouTube without yourconsent you'll be able to take it downbecause of some link back to this that'sright I think the most important thingthat we can do when we're talking aboutdata from a real world being able topower these things is that we need toown property rights over the data weshouldn't sign it over to companiesthrough terms of service we shouldn'tgive it away if you fundamentally own itthen you can be in control and you're atthe ground level of all of the economiesand all of the use cases that are goingto spin up through historyit's a lot but uh we're on the way nowTom Graham thank you so much for sharingthis technology thank you very muchand sunny Bates I'm so sorry thank youso much
