now Johnny Elon Musk and other Techleaders they're causing or they'recalling rather for somewhat of a pauseon artificial intelligence also known asA.I what do you make of these publiccallsI think they're important I think weought to pay attention to them when youwhen you have someone like uh like ElonMusk the head of Deep Mind in Google youknow nearly a thousand other people whoare on the bleeding edge of Technologysaying like slow down guys we we're notquite sure what we're about to unleashon the world I I I think I think weought to pause uh and I'm not sure thatthe general public yet reallyunderstands how all of their lives willchange and could potentially changebecause of this new technologyyeah and I don't want to spend all thetime talking about the negatives I thinkwe'll get them out of the way and we'lltalk about them right because there area lot of positives as well this is atechnology as you were saying a lot ofpeople don't know a whole bunch about itthey're playing around with it they'repulling up chat GDP and these othertools and they're trying to learn andunderstand them what are some of therisks that you believe are driving thosecalls to pause and you even wrote youknow you tweeted about this and you'reat a very insightful post on the need tomaybe pause and consider what you knowour steps forward what do you make ofthatlook I mean for sure there aretransformative positive benefits fromfrom this new technology and we can wecan definitely definitely talk aboutthatpeople's people will be healthier theirlives could potentially be longer theycould we could solve problems that we'venever been able to solve beforehowever if we're not careful we couldunleash uh you know a beastimagine imagineuh governments in a race towardsautonomous weapons what is an autonomousweaponright now if you're the United Statesgovernment and you have a drone that'sgoing after a terrorist you have anoperator human being you know sittingsitting behind a system uh makingdecisions as to whether to kill or tonot kill or whether civilians areinvolved or not involved we could bemoving into a world where the machinesmake the decisions for themselves theydecide if they're optimized to kill youknow what's the most effective way tokill their their teach the machineteaches itself you know based upon howit's based upon how it's programmed ifyou're the United States of Americawhich you know we we you know certainlyare not a perfect Nation but we have areputation in our entire history forcaring about things like you know theethics of war and you know reducingreducing casualties and all of thesethings but what if you're North Koreaand what if you decide either by bytheft or by your own Innovation uh thatnow is the time to to do what you'vebeen threatening to do forever and thesystems teach itself uh what what canhappen I mean that that's thecatastrophic scenario that's the theapocalypse uh you could also have thethe mass unemployment of people you knowas as new technology always threatensthe the the status quo where you don'thave the uh the economic system catch upwith the technology quickly enough andwhen technology moves at thisaccelerated paceunless you press pause you don't havethe opportunity to think through thosethings and as always I mean I think youknow one of the big challenges is uhwhen you have a small group of eitherum uh people who think new technology iscool and they just want to try stuff thesmartest people in the world or giganticcompanies whose commercial interests aredriving them to make decisions that onlyaffect the bottom line often excludingfrom that conversation are the peoplemost affected often excluded from theconversation are ethicists and religiousleaders and people between the coastswhose lives will be deeply impacted bythese things and I'm I'm afraidum that the whole worldand no exaggeration Billy18 months from nowthe world as we know it could beunrecognizable and back in 1945 or soum Albert Einstein and a group of atomicscientists created something called theDoomsday Clockand it it's uh it's meant to measure howclose we are to an apocalypse while youand I are talking right now thatDoomsday Clock is 90 seconds to midnightit's the closest it's ever been beforeand that was beforethis sudden acceleration of AI I meanthere's so much to unpack with what youjust said and the letter that we'rereferencing which came through thefuture of Life Institute this is theletter that Elon Musk and others signedwhat was so interesting to me among anumber of other elements was a mentionthat you just referenced but you knowthe fact that even people being replacedif they're booted out of their jobs inplace of AI there's value in those jobsright that the jobs give value to peopleyou know there's so much of the humanelement that you can't just replace withtechnology in culture in society at theindividual level and I thought it wasinteresting in what you wrote on Twitteryou called for a symposium to bringpeople together a forum to have adiscussion immediately about how do wemove forward in this but one of thecomponents of that and and I want you toyou know break this down but you talkedabout having faith leaders as part ofthat ethicist as part of that why isthat so essential to this conversationwell for too long faith has been a blindspot in Silicon Valley I mean there havebeen people of faith in Silicon Valleyyou and I know you know some of them andone of the reasons why I am uh suddenlypaying attention to this issue isbecause of a dear friend of mine who hada very private conversation with notlong ago who said Johnny we need peoplelike you involved in this now and yet uhso often when it comes to the bleedingedge of Technology when it comes toissues related to National Securityum Faith leaders are often excluded fromthe conversation people who focus on themorality and the ethics of things areexcluded from the from the conversationandin something like this that's a matterof life and death right you gotta havethe people sitting around the table whoare saying but have you thought aboutthis but what about the people you knownot just the utility of technology orthe potential benefits and I want to beclear here you know Billy as I said inmy post like you know I am not one ofthose The World is Flat you know forsure the World is Flat you know type oftype of Christians like we Embracetechnology we Embrace Innovation weEmbrace science I am totally optimisticfor the way this technology can changethe world but here's what will happenif we don't do that intentionally thenwhat always happens is that the eitheryou know blind commercial self-interestor the bad guys wanting to takeadvantage of the Leading Edge oftechnology or the weaponization oftechnology or the use of misinformationthrough technology all of these thingsdo two things they make the world betterthey make the world worse and they andthey rob us of the opportunity to usethe technology to make the world betterand so what I'm calling on religiousleaders not to say you know this is nota boycott AIconversation what this is isa call on the moral I'm joining my voicewith Elon Musk I'm joining my voice withthose 1000 scientists and I'm askingreligious leaders and ethicists allaround the country to not make my voicealone join your voices with my voice tooand let's all say now is the time to gettogether and to ask the preemptivequestions and if that means if we presspause on the Innovation for six monthsor nine months or three months or threeweeks for that matter at this pace ofchangeum we can we can do the work needed andthis is the benefit of being in Americatoo by the way because we are so farahead of this in this technology we'remuch further ahead than the competitorswe can press pause without losing to anyof these other other competitors whomight misuse this technology and Ibelieve maybe that's providential as abelieving Christian I think maybe Godhas given the United States of AmericaAnother Blessing this is the nextinternet except for it's so much morethan the internet and yet as a countrylike ours we have the opportunity topress pause and ask the right questionsto make sure that our next technologicalinnovation is not just a transformativeone an interesting one A cool oneum potentially a detrimental one butthat it is a moral transformation tooyeah absolutely I mean we've come a longway from arguing about whether or not wewant a self-driving car right I meanthat was this conversation was reallyfocused a lot in areas like that rightyou know is this good is this bad thisis so much bigger with so much potentialas you were saying to help people'slives it's easy to focus on the negativeand I do want to readum part of this letter because it isinteresting when you look at whatthey're talking about here and you'retalking about morals and values and andethics and as Believers and Christiansthose are things that are essential tous obviously but even these Tech leadersright they're talking about this as wellin fact the letter says in part shouldwe automate away all the jobs includingthe fulfilling ones should we developnon-human Minds that might eventuallyoutnumber outsmart Obsolete and replaceus should we risk loss of control of ourcivilization those are some prettystrong words but but a lot of what'sgoing on there and I'd love for you toreflect on it is a reflection on ethicsand values and fulfillment right thathuman beings need to experience so I Ifound that to be incredibly pertinentyeah and it's uh you know from atheological perspective become religiousfor just a second uh it is a you knowthe Bible talks about how um how thesethings are written on our hearts rightthey're inside of us and if you watchreally closely every once in a whilethey pop up in our in our culture andthey're popping up again and uh look youknow I think human beings are unique andand here's the fact with this technologyum as advanced as it is and as easy asit may be to to misuse uh and on theconverse the transformative benefitswhere we could finally cure cancer wecould solvehomelessness we could fix our brokengovernment bureaucracy we can optimizefor everything that our politicians aretelling us that they're promising us todo whatever side of the aisle all that'sall that's true but you can still unplugit and as a human being our brains areare uniqueandum I I don't believe technology canreplace the humanbut I do believe technology can replacemuch of our human lives and these arechoices that we need to make and thosechoices need to be made by a group ofpeople not a handful of peopleoptimizing for uh Stronger security orfor maximum profit or for what's nextand what's cool or forsuppressionautocracy control all of these otherhorrible thingsthe good and the bad of it is all thosescience fiction movies you've watchedwe're about to live in it short of thealiens and all the good and the bad ofit is going to be realized by us thedecisions we make now will determine thelives our children will will enjoy anduh and this is the moment to press pauseto gather together to ask the rightquestions and to make sure the UnitedStates isn't just leading in technologybut they were leading with our valuestooyeah that is a powerful word and youlook out you know it would seem to mewhen you get together and you have thisconversation it's not only how do we usethis technology right what are ourparameters it would also be I wouldimagine how do we prevent others some ofthe Nations you mentioned you've gotChina you've got Russia from misusingthis right how do we as a as a keystakeholderum as a country ensure that thistechnology could also be used to stopthe misuse of this technology and sothere's a lot I mean there's a lot atplay there uh it's it's a totallydifferent type of not only beneficialsubset of of you know technology butalso potentially Warfare which you knowthat that raises a lot of questions evenPublic Safety right I mean there havebeen conversations about policing andcan there be you know can AI Drivepolicing right you still seem to needthat human being right that component ofemotion you're not going to be able torecreate that but there's so much youcan do uh with it and so it's going tobe really interesting to see where thisgoes from here Johnny really appreciateyour time uh breaking it all down today
